Augmented Reality (AR). What is it you may ask? AR is a live direct or indirect view of a physical, real-world environment whose elements are augmented (or supplemented) by computer-generated sensory input such as sound, video, graphics or GPS data. Information about the environment and its objects overlaid on the real world. As a result, the technology functions by enhancing one’s current perception of reality. By contrast, Virtual Reality (VR) replaces the real world with a simulated one. The later tends to be more expensive, not as scalable and takes one out of the exhibitor experience.

The Webilize team (Portfolio and Testimonials) and ALCHEMY studio team recently partook at the Annual Conference for the Association of Science Technology Centers (ASTC) held in Tampa, Florida, on September 24th to the 27th, 2016. It was a chance for the joint team to showcase their lines of expertise to the Science Museum Industry. Webilize is a tech company located in Vancouver, BC, Canada. We provide software development services as well as the smart glass technology to bring together the sound, video, and graphics for Augmented Reality. ALCHEMY studio, located in Ridgefield, CT, specializes in master planning by transforming and enriching the museum experience through exploration, innovation, and visioning. They have provided exhibition expertise for approximately 20 years.

With Google (Arts & Culture) already helping to pave the way for Augmented Reality technology within Science Museums, we found that there were great excitement and a high level of interest in integrating the new AR technology within exhibitions at science centers. The Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History also uses innovative AR technology to enhance the learning experience for its visitors.

Here is a list of some of the key benefits of integrating innovative Augmented Reality Technology within museums:

  1. Experience: Create a visual tour guide application and display 3D objects in a real-world setting that can effectively resurrect people and objects that were previously not viewable, such as dinosaurs and historical figures.
  2. Engagement: Learn about exhibitions engagingly with vibrant graphics, videos, and 3D models for an immersive experience, and audio to support the content in multiple languages. Including gaming techniques into augmented reality experiences create unlimited interactivity.
  3. Increase Visitors: Smart glass tours bring about a new tour option and a great way to engage the tech-savvy audience. State-of-the-art museum visitor experience and connect with the audience digitally.
  4. Analytics: Learn about your visitors, get detailed reports on engagement, exhibits, and points of interest. Seamlessly change your content using our web system on demand. Easy to manage and update the exhibit content. Connect with the audience digitally and cater to content for different audiences. Discover exhibits of interest using Augmented Reality.

Museum data is essential to the visitor’s experience. The right information delivered at the right moment increases engagement and enjoyment.

AR Technology can help make an ordinary museum visit turn into a lasting memory.
